日本国憲法で英語のお勉強1: 第1～3条

CHAPTER I（第一章） The Emperor（天皇）

Article 1. The Emperor shall be the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people, deriving his position from the will of the people with whom resides sovereign power.

第一条　天皇は、日本国の象徴であり日本国民統合の象徴であつて、この地位は、主権の存する日本国民の総意に基く。

・derive A from B「B から A を引き出す・取り出す・抽出する，A の由来は B にある」。天皇の地位の由来は the will of the people にあるということですね。何と river「川」が語源です。

　river（川）→ derive「由来する」

　private（私的）→「自分のものにする・盗む」→deprive「奪う」

・reside with...「……に備わっている，ある」。普通は reside in... です。レジデンス（residence）の元になっている動詞です。

・sovereign /sɑvrɪn/ [ｻｳﾞﾘﾝ, ｿｳﾞﾘﾝ]「主権を有する，君主の，最高権力を持つ，最高の，卓越した，（薬が）よく効く」。sovereign の reign は「主権，統治，支配，治世」です。reign をしっかり覚えれば，頭に sove を付けて綴れます。

Article 2. The Imperial Throne shall be dynastic and succeeded to in accordance with the Imperial House Law passed by the Diet.

第二条　皇位は、世襲のものであつて、国会の議決した皇室典範の定めるところにより、これを継承する。

・throne「玉座，王位」

・dynasty「王朝」→dynastic「王朝の・王家の」

・succeed to...「……を継承する」。succeed（下にsuc=sub＋行くceed→下に続く→継承する，成功する）。ここでは受け身になっていますね。

　succeed to the Imperial Throne「皇位を継承する」

→the Imperial Throne is succeeded to「皇位は継承される」

・in accordance with...「……に一致して・従って」

・pass「（法案）を通す・可決する」

・the Diet「（日本の）国会」

Article 3. The advice and approval of the Cabinet shall be required for all acts of the Emperor in matters of state, and the Cabinet shall be responsible therefor.

第三条　天皇の国事に関するすべての行為には、内閣の助言と承認を必要とし、内閣が、その責任を負ふ。

・approve「承認する」→approval「承認」

・the Cabinet「内閣」

・therefor：古語ないし法律用語。for it の代わり。be responsible for it → be responsible therefor。therefore「それゆえ」と要区別。thereat, therein, thereon などもあり。
