CHAPTER II. RENUNCIATION OF WAR
第二章 戦争の放棄
Article 9. Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.
・aspire to...「……を切望［希求］する」。to の後は動詞でもよい：aspire to-V「V することを切望する」，aspire to be...「……になることを切望する」。なおここは，and で繋がれた重文を分詞構文にしたもの（S V, and S V. → Ving, S V.）
The Japanese people aspire to peace, and they renounce war.
→Aspiring to peace, the Japanese people renounce war.
・renounce「放棄する」→renunciation「放棄」（第二章タイトル）。announce の逆と考えると分かりやすい。announce を “re-” で取り消すイメージ。なお名詞形の renunciation には “o” が無くなっているが，pronounce「発音する」→pronunciation「発音」でも “o” が無くなる（announce の名詞形は announcement。annunciation はマイナー語）
・threat「脅し・脅迫，脅す」。ほぼ同義語の menace もあり。
・settle「解決する；定住する」。start → startle，spark → sparkle のように，set → settle という関係。
・dispute「論争，紛争；討論する」。dis「離れて（distance）・異なって（differ）」＋pute「考える」
In order to accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, land, sea, and air forces, as well as other war potential, will never be maintained. The right of belligerency of the state will not be recognized.
前項の目的を達するため、陸海空軍その他の戦力は、これを保持しない。国の交戦権は、これを認めない。
・air force「空軍」
・potential「潜在能力，素質；可能性」→war potentioal「戦力」
・maintain「維持する，保持する，保守（メンテナンス）する；主張する」
・belligerency /bəlɪdʒərənsi/「交戦・戦争行為；好戦性」。belligerence とも。
CHAPTER III. RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF THE PEOPLE
第三章 国民の権利及び義務
Article 10. The conditions necessary for being a Japanese national shall be determined by law.
第十条 日本国民たる要件は、法律でこれを定める。
・necessary condition「必要条件」→conditions necessary for...「……に必要な諸条件」。necessary に for... が掛かることにより，necessary が condition(s) の後ろに回った。necessary conditions for being...「……であるために必要条件」は，表現として使えそうですね（優秀な医者とか）。
・a national「国民」。Japanese nationals「日本国民」（堅い表現）→Japanese people（やわらかい表現）
Article 11. The people shall not be prevented from enjoying any of the fundamental human rights. These fundamental human rights guaranteed to the people by this Constitution shall be conferred upon the people of this and future generations as eternal and inviolate rights
・prevent 人 from Ving「人が V するのを妨げる」→（受動態）人 is prevented from Ving「人は V することを妨げられる」→人 shall not be prevented from Ving「人は V することを妨げられるべからず」
・enjoy「（権利・能力）を享受する」
・the fundamental human rights「基本的人権」
・guarantee 物事 to 人 = guarantee 人 物事「人に物事を保証する」。今回は to があり，左を使っている。物事 (which are) guaranteed to 人「人に保証される物事」→ fundamental human rights guaranteed to the people「国民に保証される基本的人権」
・confer「協議する（→カンファレンス）；授与する」→confer 物事 on 人「人に物事を授与する」
・this and future generations = this generation and future generations「現在（の世代）と将来の世代」を因数分解のように括ったもの。
・violate「違反する，侵害する」→inviolate「侵されない，侵害されない，神聖な」（形容詞であることに注意）。violate にも「侵された」という形容詞用法があったが，古語。現代は violated であろう。

第二条「戦争の放棄」は第9条のみで終わり，第10条からは第三章に入りました。実に第40条まで第三章が続きます。
