III
In one of the flower-filled meadows of sunny Greece, there played all day a golden-haired boy named Phaëton, who was the pride and delight of his mother Clymene, a stately maiden whom Apollo had once wooed and won. The boy was willful and headstrong, but beautiful as a young god; and his mother, in her foolish pride, often reminded him how favored he was above all other children in being the son of Apollo. Each morning she led him to a place where he could see the sun rise, and told him that his father was just then harnessing the fiery steeds to his golden-wheeled car, and would soon be leaving his palace of burnished gold to drive across the heavens, bringing daylight to the darkened earth.
天気の良いギリシアの，花で覆われたある草原で，パエトーンという名の金髪の少年が一日中遊んでいた。彼は母親のクリュメネーの自慢と喜びの種であり，彼女はアポロンがかつて求愛して手に入れた堂々たる娘であった。少年はわがままで強情であり，若い神として美しくもあった。そして母親は，愚かな程に息子を誇っており，しばしば息子に，アポロンの息子である点において他のどの子どもたちよりも恵まれていると教えた。毎朝彼女は息子を，日の出が見られる所へ連れて行き，貴方のお父さんは今ちょうど炎の馬を金の車輪をした戦車に繋いで，金色に輝く宮殿を間もなく出発し，暗い地上に日光をもたらすために天を駆けるのよと教えた。
・パエトーンはアポロンとクリュメネーの子で，クリュメネーは人間ではなくオケアノスの娘らしいので，半神ではなく神ですね。
・willful と headstrong は似たような意味です（我がまま，強情）
・told him that his father was just then harnessing... の部分は間接話法ですが，日本語では喋っているように（直接話法として）訳すと読みやすいでしょう。
She told him that his father was just then harnessing...
→"Your father is just now harnessing...," she said to him.
his father → your father，was → is，just then → just now
She told him of Apollo's great beauty, and of his wonderful music, and of his high position among the gods, because his chariot was nothing less than the glorious sun. Phaëton never tired of hearing these stories, and it was no wonder that he became very proud of his divine parentage, and boasted of it among his playmates. The children only laughed at his wonderful tales, and to convince them he grew more arrogant in his bearing, until they, angered by his continued boasts, bade him give some proof of his claims or else be silent. This Phaëton could not do; so they taunted him with his godlike appearance, and sneered at his pretensions until the boy, roused to action by their repeated insults, ran to his mother, and begged her to tell him whether he might not speak to his wonderful, but unknown father, and obtain from him some proof to silence the children's tongues.
彼女は彼に，アポロンが非常に美しいこと，彼の素晴らしい音楽，そして彼の戦車が他でもない，輝く太陽であるが故に，彼が神々の間で高い地位を占めていることを語って聞かせた。パエトーンはこれらの話を決して聞き飽きることがなく，彼がそんな神の親を持つことを非常に誇りに思い，遊び仲間にそのことを自慢したのも尤もなことだった。遊び仲間の子どもたちは彼の素晴らしい話を笑い飛ばしただけであったので，彼は彼らを納得させるために益々態度が傲慢になり，彼のしつこい自慢話に怒った子どもたちはついに，その主張の証拠を示すか，さもなければ黙っていろと言った。これをパエトーンはできなかった。それで彼らは彼の神のような外見を嘲り，彼の神気取りを冷笑したので，彼らの繰り返される侮辱に対し行動をかき立てられた彼は母親の所に駆け寄り，素晴らしいが会ったことのない父親に会い，彼らを黙らせるような証拠を貰ってはいけないだろうか，教えて欲しいと言った。
・It is no wonder that..., It is small wonder that... は「……なのももっともだ（It is natural that...）」で，くだけた言い方では It is と that を消して No wonder S V... と言ったりできます。
・This Phaëton could not do を「このパエトーンは……」と訳さないよう気を付けましょう。This Phaëton could not do = Phaëton could not do this「パエトーンはこれをすることができなかった」です（O S V = S V O）
Clymene hesitated to send the child on the long necessary journey, but yielding at last to his entreaties, she showed him the way to his father's palace. It was night when Phaëton set out, and he was obliged to travel quickly if he wished to reach his journey's end before the sun-car left the golden portals of the east. The palace of the sun was marvelously wrought, and the light from its golden columns and glittering jeweled towers so dazzled the eyes of Phaëton that he was afraid to draw near.
クリュメネーは必要とされる長旅に息子を送り出すのを躊躇ったが，遂には彼の懇願に負け，彼の父の宮殿への道を教えた。パエトーンが出発したのは夜で，太陽の車が東の金色に輝く出口から出る前に辿り着きたければ急ぐ必要があった。太陽の神殿は驚くべき造りで，その金の柱と輝く宝石の塔から放たれる光は目を眩ませる程だったのでパエトーンは恐れて近づくことができなかった。
・hesitate to-V は「V するのを躊躇う」です。
・yield to... は「……に屈する」で，今回は「負け」（懇願に負け）と訳しました。
・wrought は worked の古い形で，ここでは「作られる，細工される」という意味です。
・be afraid to-V は「怖くて V できない，V する勇気がない」です。「自分が V するのではないかと恐れる」は be arfaid of Ving です。
But remembering the taunts of his playmates, he grew bolder, and sought out his father to beg the boon for which he had traveled so far and wearily. When Apollo, from his ivory throne, saw the boy approaching, he welcomed him kindly and called him by the name of son. Hearing this, Phaëton lost all fear, and told his father how the children had refused to believe Clymene's stories, and had taunted him because he could not prove the truth of his mother's claim.
しかし遊び仲間に嘲られたのを思い出すと勇気が出てきて，はるばると疲労困憊になってまでやって来た目的である，頼み事をするために父親を探し出した。その少年が近づいてくるのをアポロンが象牙の玉座から眺めると，彼は優しく歓迎して息子を名前で呼んだ。これを聞くとパエトーンは恐怖を忘れ，クリュメネーの話を友達が信じてくれない，母親の主張が正しいと証明できないため馬鹿にされると話した。
・weary は tired の意味であり，wearily は tiredly「疲れて」の意味です。「ウェアリ（リ）」ではなく「ウィアリ（リ） /wɪəri→wɪərəli/」です。
・こういう how は「いかに……」ではなく「……こと」で大丈夫です。つまり「友達がいかに信じてくれないか」ではなく「友達が信じてくれないこと」でよいです。
The lofty brow of Apollo grew cloudy as he listened to Phaëton's words, and he promised to give the boy the proof he desired by granting him any favor he might ask. Instantly Phaëton demanded that he be allowed that very day to drive the sun-chariot; for when those on the earth saw him in that exalted place, they could no longer refuse to believe that he was indeed the favored child of Apollo.
パエトーンの言葉を聞くと，アポロンの高貴な目元は曇った。彼は少年に，どんな願い事でも聞くことで，少年が望んだ証拠を与えてやろうと約束した。直ちにパエトーンは，正にその日に太陽の戦車を走らせる許可を求めた。というのも自分がそんなに高い場所にいるのを地上の者達が見たら，彼らはもはや自分が本当にアポロンのお気に入りの子であることを信じざるを得ないからだった。
・brow /braʊ/ は「眉；額」ですが「目元」と訳しました。
・grant は「保証する，叶える」です。
・demanded that he be の he be は「仮定法現在」と言われるものです。要求する内容は，まだ行われていないので原形（be）のまま書くのです。命令文が原形で書かれるのも，まだ行われていない行為だからでしょう。demanded that he (shoud) be からの should の省略とも言えます。
Dismayed at this unexpected request, the sun-god sought to persuade Phaëton to ask some other boon, for he knew that no hand but his own could guide the four winged horses that were harnessed to the golden sun-car. But the boy was determined to carry out his plan; and with all the willfulness of a conceited child, he refused to heed his father's warnings. As Apollo had sworn by the river Styx—the most terrible of all oaths—to grant Phaëton's request whatever it might be, he was obliged to fulfill his promise; and very reluctantly he led the boy to the portals of the palace, where the impatient horses already stood pawing the ground.
この予期せぬ要求に慌て，太陽神は他の頼み事をするようパエトーンを説得しようとした。というのも彼は，金色の太陽の車に繋がれた，翼の生えた4頭の馬を制御することは，自らの手でしかできないと知っていたからだ。しかし少年は自分の計画を実行すると心に決めていた。そして自惚れの強い子どもが持つ強情さで，彼は父の警告に耳を傾けなかった。アポロンは川の女神ステュクスに，パエトーンの要求を何であっても叶えると誓っていた（ステュクスとの誓いは最も恐ろしい誓いであった）ので，約束を果たすことを余儀なくされた。そして非常に気が進まない気持ちで少年を宮殿の出口に連れて行き，そこではしびれを切らした馬達が，蹄で地面をかきながら既に立って待っていた。
・persuade は「説得に成功する」の意味になりますので，説得できなかった場合は try to persuade などとする必要があります。ここでは sought to persuade となっています。
・ステュクスの恐ろしい誓いについてはウィキペディアを引きます。“オリュンポス山の神々は，重要な誓いを立てる際に，虹の女神イーリスにステュクスの水を汲んでこさせる。神々はその水を飲み干すことで誓約を確立するが，もしその誓いを破った場合，1年間は仮死状態に陥るという厳しい罰が科せられる。さらにその後9年間はオリュンポス山から追放され，10年目にしてようやく罪が許されると伝えられている”（ウィキペディア「ステュクス」より）
