「ギリシア・ローマ神話(11)」の続きで，「音楽家アポロン」の III です。
Apollo the Musician III
When the news of Marsyas's dreadful fate spread abroad, people were careful for many years not to anger any of the deities by presuming to rival them; but in time the memory of that tragic event faded away, and the horror of it was forgotten.
マルシュアースの恐ろしい運命の知らせが遠くまで広まると，人々は何年もの間，神に立ち向かえるなどと思い上がってどんな神でも怒らせないよう気を付けた。しかしやがてあの悲しい出来事の記憶は薄れていき，その恐怖は忘れられた。
・abroad は「外国に」のほか「（遠くまで）広まって」です。元々 broad から出来ているので，右の意味が先なんでしょうね。
・be careful not to-V「V しないよう気を付ける」は重要かつ便利な表現です。△be careful in order not to-V などとする必要はありません。
・in time は「間に合って」は重要ですが，ここは over time「時が経つとやがて」の意味でしょう。
In the halls of King Midas was the noise of great mirth and feasting, and the sound of music filled the spacious room where the king and his court sat at the banquet-table. Beside the king stood Pan, his favorite flute-player, who was no other than the famous sylvan god of shepherds; and as the wine went round and the king grew boastful of his possessions, he exclaimed loudly that not even Apollo himself could produce such exquisite music as fell from the flute of Pan.
ミダース王の広間ではどんちゃん騒ぎの騒音が鳴り響き，広々とした部屋は音楽の音色で満たされ，王と廷臣は宴席に座っていた。王の側にはお気に入りのフルート奏者パーンが立っており，彼は他ならぬ，羊飼いたちの，有名な森の神であった。ワインが注いで回され，王がその所有物を自慢し始めると，彼は声高に，さしものアポロン神も，パーンのフルートから零れ落ちる音楽ほど美しい音を奏でることはできまいと言った。
・ミダース（ミダス）は触る物全てを金に変える能力を貰い，そのせいで食べ物が食べられなくなって困り果てる逸話も有名ですね。Midas touch「ミダス王の手」は「金儲けの才能」の意味です。

・spacious は space の形容詞の一つで「広々とした」です。もう一つは spatial「空間の」です。
The guests, remembering the fate of Marsyas, grew pale and begged the king not to let his boast be heard; but Midas laughed scornfully and, raising his drinking cup above his head, called upon Apollo to appear.
客達はマルシュアースの運命を思い出して青ざめ，その自慢話が神々に聞かれたら大変ですから，どうかお止め下さいと言った。しかしミダースは嘲るように笑い，盃を頭より上に掲げ，アポロンが現れるよう呼びかけた。
・scorn は「嘲る」と言う意味です。お菓子のスコーンとは綴りも発音も違います。この手の組み合わせを以下にまとめています。
To the surprise and dismay of all, the god of music suddenly stood before them, beautiful as the dawn and glowing with divine wrath. Though Pan was himself a deity, he had no desire to challenge Apollo, and looked fearfully at the sun-god's angry frown; but the king, drunk with pride, commanded him to play, and bade the god of music surpass the playing if he could. There was, of course, no question as to which was the better musician, and the guests loudly proclaimed Apollo the victor.
皆が驚き
・to ...'s surprise は「……が驚いたことには」という重要表現です。to the surprise of ... とも書きます。to は行きつく結果を示します。To the surprise and dismay of all で「皆が驚き狼狽えたことに（は）」ですね。強調は much to ...'s surprise か to ...'s great surprise とします。
・glow「輝く」を grow「成長する」と混同しないようくれぐれも気を付けて下さい。green grass grows「緑の草が育つ」で覚えましょう（glass「ガラス」と grass「草」の混同も避けられる）
・drunk with... は「（感情）に酔いしれて」という意味で，酒に酔っているわけではありません。しかしここでミダス王はワインを飲んでいるので，ややこしいです。
・音楽の神アポロン（the god of music）が太陽の神（sun-god）と表現されていますが，アポロンは “光明神の性格を持つことから前5世紀には時としてヘーリオスと混同されて太陽神とされ，ローマ時代にはすっかり太陽神と化した”（ウィキペディア「アポローン」より）
One story tells that to prove further the superiority of Apollo's playing the company went to the old mountain-god Tmolus, and let him make the final decision. Tmolus had to clear the trees from his ears to listen; and having done this he bent his head, and all his trees leaned with him. He heard with delight both musicians play; and when the last soft notes fell from Apollo's lyre, the mountain-god awarded him the victory. But Midas at the beginning of the contest had demanded the right to decide on the merits of the players, and he would not accept this verdict. In his mad perversity and fondness for his favorite, he cried out that Pan was the better player, and would therefore be awarded the prize. Angered at this unfair decision, Apollo left the banquet-hall, but not before he had assured Midas that the injustice would be punished.
一説に，アポロンの方が優れていることを証明するために，一行はトモーロスという年老いた山の神の所まで行き，彼に最終的な結論を下させたという。トモーロスは聞くために耳の辺りの木々を取り払わねばならなかった。そしてこれが終わると頭を傾け，山の木々もそれと共に傾いた。彼は両者の音楽を喜んで聞いた。そしてアポロンの竪琴から最後の音が零れ落ちると，山の神はアポロンの勝利を認めた。しかしミダース王は勝負の最初に，演奏者の優劣について結論を下す権利を要求しており，この評決を受け入れようとしなかった。ひねくれた考えとお気に入りのパーンへの贔屓から，ミダース王はパーンの方が上手かったから，パーンに賞を与えると叫びました。この不公平な決定に怒ったアポロンは宴会場を去ったが，去る前にアポロンは，不正は罰せられるべきだとミダースに悟らせるのを忘れてはいなかった。
・Tmolus「トモーロス」は，英語では t が黙字となり「モウラス」と発音されます。山の神らしく，トモーロスの山はリュディアにあったようで，小アジア（トルコ）ですね。
・「with＋抽象名詞＝副詞」というのがあり，with delight を副詞にせよという問題があったら，答えは delightedly「喜んで」です。
・verdict「評決」の成り立ちは「まこと（ver）＋言う（dict）」です。「非常に」という意味の very は，元は「まことに」というニュアンスだったのでしょう。この very に -ly の付いた verily「まことに」というのもあります。
・過去分詞 angered は，anger に「怒らせる」という意味があることを示しています。
・この not before は面白いですね。Apollo left the banquet-hall, but not before he had assured Midas that...「アポロンは宴会場を去ったが，それはアポロンがミダースに……ことを確信させる前ではなかった」→「アポロンは宴会場を去ったが，その前にアポロンはミダースに……ことを確信させた」
These words came true in a most unexpected way, for when the king looked into his mirror the next morning, he found a pair of large fuzzy ass's ears growing in the place of his own natural ones. Horrified at his absurd appearance, Midas did not dare show himself to his people; but sent in haste for a barber, and bade him make a wig large enough to cover the monstrous ears.
こうした言葉は全く予期せぬやり方で実現した。というのもミダースが翌朝鏡を覗き込むと，自分の本来の耳が生えている場所に，うぶ毛で覆われた大きなロバの耳が生えていたのである。この滑稽な外見に恐れをなし，ミダース王は人民の前に姿を現すことができなくなった。しかし急いで床屋を呼びにやり，この怪物じみた耳をすっぽり覆い隠す
・fuzzy は「うぶ毛（fuzz）で覆われた」などの意味を持ちますが，同時に「ファジィ制御」（家電などに使われている機構）の「あいまいな」の意味も持つ語です。どちらかというと「ファズィ（/fʌzi/）」の方が英語の発音に近いです。
・send for... は「……を呼びにやる（……を呼びに人を派遣する）」という意味です。散髪するときは自分が行くものですが，王なので散髪屋に来させるのですね。
・monstrous「怪物じみた」は，monster の e がなくなるので注意です。winter → wintry も e がなくなります。fire → fiery「炎のような」は fire の e はなくなるのですが，代わりに r の前に e が出てきてしまい，r と e が反転したような fiery となります。
For many hours the barber was closeted with the king, and when the wig was finished, he was allowed to leave the palace, after having sworn never to reveal the king's misfortune under pain of death. For some time the secret was safely kept; but the poor barber found life unbearable, since he lived in constant fear of letting out the truth about the king's ears in spite of his frantic efforts to be silent. Whenever Midas appeared in the city streets, the barber had to rush home and shut himself up lest he should scream out the story of the wig.
床屋は何時間も王と部屋に閉じこもり，鬘が完成すると，王の不幸な秘密を洩らしたら死刑になることを誓った後に，宮殿から解放された。暫くの間その秘密は守られていたが，哀れな床屋は必死に秘密を守るよう努めたものの，いつ真実を漏らしてしまうか絶えず恐怖していたので，その生活が耐えられなくなった。ミダース王が街に出てくる時はいつでも，床屋は自宅に駆けこんで閉じこもり，鬘の話を叫んでしまわないようにした。
・「クローゼット」という語を使う be closeted with... は「……と共に部屋・密室に閉じこもる」という意味です。そう言えば close「閉じる」という部分を含んだ語ですね。
・under pain of... は「違反したら……という条件で」という熟語です。under は on [upon] とも言います。「アーサー王伝説」の全訳で3回も出て来ました。
And now again the second time there came ambassadors from Lucius Tiberius, Emperor of Rome, demanding, under pain of war, tribute and homage from King Arthur, and the restoration of all Gaul, which he had conquered from the tribune Flollo.「そして再びローマ皇帝ルキウス・ティベリウスから，アーサー王は臣従し，護民官フロロから征服したガリアを全て返還せよ，さもなくば戦争だという使者がやって来た」（アーサー王と騎士達(22)）
・let out は「外に出してやる」というイメージで，ここでは「声に出す」です。「アウトレットモール」の語源ですね。
One day he thought of a happy solution of his difficulty and one that broke his long seal of silence without endangering his life. He went out into the fields, dug a deep hole, and putting his head down as far as he could he shouted:—
"King Midas has ass's ears, King Midas has ass's ears."
ある日彼はこの困難を解決し，長らく守っていた秘密を，命を失うことなく漏らす上手い方法を思いついた。彼は野に出て行って，深い穴を掘り，頭をできるだけ深く入れて，こう叫んだ。「ミダース王の耳はロバの耳，ミダース王の耳はロバの耳」と。
・happy には「うまい，巧みな」の意味があります。a happy solution は「上手い解決策」ですね。この happy を初めて学んだのは，森一郎『試験にでる英単語』の第IV章「だれもがひっかかる罠」です。
Then he went home again, much happier for having told some one of his secret, even though it was only Mother Earth. But the truth once told did not stay hidden even in the earth; for in time the hole was filled again and reeds grew over the spot, and as the wind swayed them back and forth they murmured: "King Midas has ass's ears. King Midas has ass's ears."
それからまた彼は家に戻り，母なる大地相手であったとはいえ，秘密を人に言えたことでずいぶん気が楽になった。しかし一旦語られた真実は，地中にすら留まることはなかった。というのもやがて穴は塞がれ，葦がその地点に生え，風が葦を前後に揺らすと，葦が呟き始めた。「ミダース王の耳はロバの耳，ミダース王の耳はロバの耳」と。
・この even の含意を一瞬考えましたが，「人間の心の中はおろか，地中にすら」ということでしょう。実際床屋は自分の心中に留めておくことができませんでした。
・back and forth は「前へ後ろへ」です。順番が逆になっているのは，短い単語が前の方がバランスが良いからでしょうか。
It was not long before all the people in the countryside had gathered to hear the strange whispering of the reeds, and then the secret could be kept no longer. But though every one knew the truth King Midas continued to wear his wig, and no one ever saw the real size of his ears.
間もなく田舎にいる全ての民衆が集まって葦の奇妙な囁きを耳にし，もはや秘密は公然のものとなった。しかし誰もが真実を知っていたにも拘らずミダース王は鬘を被り続け，彼の耳の大きさを知る者は誰もいなかった。
・It was not long before... は「間もなく……だった」，It won't be long before... は「間もなく……だろう」です。副詞節なので before 以下に will は不要です。

・最後の But though... 以下の構造はちょっと複雑ですね。But though S1 V1, S2 V2.「しかし S1 V1 だったにもかかわらず，S2 V2 だった」です。But はこの文より前の分に対する「しかし」であり，though は S1 V1 と S2 V2 を逆説で繋いでいます。
