「ギリシア・ローマ神話(4)」の続きで，第3章に入ります。
Chapter III The Deluge
The children of Epimetheus and Pandora wandered in the gardens of the earth just as their parents had done; and the generations that followed them lived peacefully and were happy, in spite of the brown-winged sprites that went about doing mischief. Men helped each other to cultivate the fruitful soil, and offered sacrifices to the gods in return for a bountiful harvest.
エピメテウスとパンドラの子どもたちは地上の楽園を，両親が行ったように彷徨った。そして彼らに続く世代は，悪さをして回る茶色い羽根の悪霊たちがいたにも拘わらず平和に暮らし幸せであった。人々は互いに協力して実りある土壌を耕し，豊かな収穫のお返しに神々に生贄を捧げた。
・章タイトルの deluge は「大洪水；殺到」という意味です。
・wander は「
・ここの go about Ving は「V して回る」という意味でしょう。『ジーニアス英和辞典』を引くと，go about Ving には「V し始める，V にしかかる」という意味もあります。
・in return (for...) は「（……の）お返しに，（……と）引き換えに」です。
This golden age of the world's history might have lasted forever if men had continued to reverence the gods; but after a time they ceased to offer prayers for health and safety, and boasted proudly of their own strength. They looked no more to high Olympus for help, but each man trusted to his own right arm. Then strife and discord arose, and fierce wars were fought among all the peoples of the earth. Brother killed brother, and fathers strove with their own sons.
この世界史の黄金時代は，仮に人間が神を尊敬し続けたならば，永遠に続くものだったかもしれない。しかし暫くすると人間は健康や安全のために祈りを捧げるのをやめてしまい，自分たちの力を鼻にかけるようになった。人間はもはや助けを求めてオリュンポス山を見上げることはなく，各人が己の右腕を頼るようになった。そして闘争や不和が巻き起こり，地上の全ての人々の間で激しい争いが行われた。兄弟同士で殺し合い，父が息子達と争った。
・If S had 過去分詞……, S' might have 過去分詞……「仮に S が……していたならば，S' は……していたかもしれない」は教科書的な仮定法過去完了です。might を would にすれば「S' は……していたであろう」であり，could にすれば「S' は……することができたのに」です。イギリス英語では一人称主語の時に would を should にすることがあります。
・cease to-V は「（次第に）V しなくなる」です。しっかり覚えていれば，unceasing「止むことのない」なんかも読めます。
・boast of... は「……を鼻にかける」です。間の proudly がなくても余り意味は変わらないでしょう。なお，boast that... とすれば「……であることを鼻にかける」と文を続けられます。
・fierce wars were fought を受動態から能動態に戻せば fought fierce wars となり，「獰猛な，激しい」という形容詞 fierce を除けば fought wars [fought a war]「戦いを戦った」となります。fight a 形容詞 war（sing a 形容詞 song, live a 形容詞 life, dream a 形容詞 dream） のようなものを「同族目的語」と言います。
Every man's hand was against his fellow, and he knew no law but that of his own will. Seldom now were the fires kindled on the neglected altars, and the smell of burnt offerings dear to the gods no longer mingled with the smoke that rose up to the white clouds around Olympus. The sacred vessels moldered in forsaken temples; around the shrines of the gods the snakes crawled lazily; and the bat and owl dwelt undisturbed among the pillars of the temples.
皆が同胞に牙をむき，法よりも己の意志に従った。打ち捨てられた祭壇に火が灯されることはもはやなく，神への燃やされた供物の匂いが，オリュンポス山を取り巻く白い雲にまで立ち上ってゆく煙と混ざることも最早なかった。忘れ去られた寺院で聖なる器は朽ちていき，神殿の周りには蛇達が怠惰に這い回り，コウモリやフクロウが寺院の柱の間で邪魔されることなく棲みついていた。
・mingle は「（……と）混ざる，混ぜる（with...）」です。
・vessel はここでは「器」ですが「船」の意味も重要です。なお女性のことを the weaker vessel と言うのは聖書の中の表現で，PC 的にとても無理な表現ですね。
・molder は「腐る，朽ちる」です。mold（恐らく別語源）が「鋳型」なので，ちょっとイメージが湧きにくいですね。
・長々と語っていますが「人が神への崇敬を忘れ，相争うようになった」ですね。
For a time the gods sat patient, believing that this state of things could not last; but seeing that mankind was growing worse instead of better, year by year, they determined to put an end to godlessness and to destroy the whole race of man. Then Jupiter called a council of the gods to decide on the most effective way of wiping out every vestige of human life so completely that not one soul would be left to tell to his children the story of those evil days, when men neglected to worship the immortal gods and allowed their temples to decay.
暫くのあいだ神々は，こうした状態は長続きしないだろうと信じて我慢していたが，人類が年々改善するどころか悪化しているのに気づいて，この神無き状態を終わらせて人類全体を破壊しようと決心した。それでジュピター（ゼウス）は神々を召集して，人間の生活のあらゆる痕跡を消し去る最も効果的な方法を話し合った。誰一人残さず，子孫達にこの邪悪な時代，人々が不滅の神々を崇拝するのを怠り，神々の神殿が朽ちるのに任せていた時代のことを語らせないほど完全に消し去る方法をである。
・day by day は「日に日に」（変化を示唆する）。year by year は「年に年に」は変ですから「年々」ですかね。
・put an end to... は「……を終わらせる」です。
・vestige は「痕跡，面影」。ゲームで，プレイヤーが自由に決めた名前を声優が読み上げることが不可能なため，主人公を代名詞で呼ぶ手法が使われます。FF10 でユウナに「君」と呼ばれたのはショックでした笑 FF14 では「冒険者」です。『ジ・エルダースクロールズ・オンライン』では主人公は一旦死んだという設定であるため，しばしば Vestige「面影」と呼ばれます。
・soul には「魂」のほか「人」の意があります。
・allow O to-V は「O が V するのを許可する」ですが，「自然と V するに任せる」の意もあることがこの例から分かりますね。
The most terrible punishment to visit upon man would be to set the whole world on fire, to make of it one great sacrificial altar on which human victims, and not the garlanded ox, would burn night and day, and from which the smoke would rise up into the heavens so thickly that it would shut out the sight of a blackened and smouldering earth. The one objection to carrying out this plan was the fear lest the flames would leap so high that they would reach even to lofty Olympus, and so endanger the sacred throne of Jupiter. Though the fire might not utterly destroy it, the gods could not bear to think of its burnished red-gold base being touched by any flame from earth's unholy fires.
人間に下される最も恐ろしい罰は，全世界を炎で包み，世界を一つの巨大な生贄の祭壇とすることであろう。花輪で飾られた雄牛ではなく，人間の生贄が昼夜を問わず燃やされ，そこから天に立ち上る煙は黒焦げになり燻り続ける地上の光景を覆い隠すほどであろう。この計画に対する一つの反対意見は，炎が余りにも高く昇りすぎてオリュンポス山にまで達し，ジュピターの聖なる玉座を脅かしかねないというものだった。炎が玉座を完全に破壊することはないにしても，磨き上げられた金色の台座が地上から立ち昇る不浄な炎によって汚されるのは想像したくもなかった。
・altar は「祭壇」，alter は「変える」です（同音）。名詞と動詞の違いがあるので，混同することはないでしょう。
・garland は「花冠・花輪（で飾る）」です。
・smolder [smoulder] は「燻（くすぶ）る」です。
・carry out は「（計画など）を実行する」です。実際「計画」が目的語になっています。
・bear に「耐える」の意味があり，bear Ving または bear to-V で「V するのを耐える」です。stand Ving，stand to-V とも言います。これらは can / could を伴い，否定・疑問文で使うのが通例です。
The only other effective method of destruction was water, and this the gods decided to employ. So on a certain day when men were everywhere feasting, and singing songs, and boasting of their victories in battle, Jupiter rent the heavens with a mighty thunderbolt, whose crashing drowned all sounds of merriment, and made men turn pale with fear. The skies opened, and the rain poured down in torrents; the rivers became swollen and flooded their banks; the waves of the sea, rising higher and higher, swept in great fury over the land, washing everything before them like so much chaff.
もう一つの唯一の効果的な破壊方法は水であり，神々はこれを使うことに決めた。それである日，人々が至る所で宴を開き，歌を歌い，戦いの勝利を誇っている時，ジュピターは強力な雷霆で空を裂き，その衝撃音はあらゆる陽気な笑い声を飲み込み，人々を恐怖に青ざめさせた。空が開き，土砂降りの雨が降り注いだ。川は膨らみ岸から溢れ，海の波はますます高くなり，怒涛の如く地上を襲って眼前にあるあらゆる物を屑のように洗い流した。
・employ は「雇用する」ですが「使う」の意味もあります。日本語でも「人を使う」と言いますし，「使用者」という表現もあります。
・rent は rend「裂く」の過去形です。『スカイリム』のドラゴンレンドというシャウトは，空中のドラゴンを撃ち落とすシャウトです。
・torrent は「激流，奔流」。torrential rain といった言い方もあります。
・swollen は「膨らんだ」。swell「膨らむ」の過去分詞です。
・before them は最初「人間の目の前にあった（あらゆる物）」なのか「神々の目の前にあった（あらゆる物）」なのか考えてしまいましたが，「最も近いものを指す」という原則に立ち返りましょう。最も近い複数名詞は the waves です。「波は，波の目の前にあったあらゆる物を洗い流した」ということですね。
・chaff「屑，もみがら」は，レーダーを撹乱するために散布される妨害物（アルミのチャフ）にも使われる語です。
Æolus, god of the storm, opened the cave where he kept the winds securely bound, and let them loose to work havoc on the earth. Soon all the lowland was covered with water; not a dry spot remained anywhere but on the hills, and thither the terrified people rushed in the vain hope that the flood would subside before the mountains were submerged. But the waves rose higher and higher; and the winds, rejoicing in their freedom, beat up the water until it almost touched the clouds. The frail boats to which men had at first desperately clung were shattered to pieces in the fury of the storm, and on the crest of the waves the bodies of the dead were tossed like playthings. Higher and higher rose the water, until at length the mountain tops were covered, and all dry land had disappeared. So were the gods avenged.
嵐の神アイオロスは風をしっかり閉じ込めておいた洞穴を開き，風が地上に大災害をもたらすように解き放った。間もなく低地は全て水に覆われた。丘を除いて水に覆われない場所はなく，怯えた人々がそちらへ，山々が水中に沈む前に洪水が収まるという虚しい期待を抱きながら殺到した。しかし波はますます高くなり，風は解き放たれたことを喜ぶかのように波を打ち上げ，遂には波は雲にまで達した。人々が最初必死でしがみついていた脆い船は荒れ狂う嵐の中で粉々になり，死者の身体が玩具のように波頭で上下していた。波はますます高くなり，遂に山頂が水に覆われ，陸地は完全に消失した。そうして神々の復讐は果たされたのである。
・work havoc on...「……に大きな被害をもたらす」は wreak havoc on... とも言います。
・subside は「収まる，静まる，引く」です。この "side" は「側」ではなく「座る（sit）」です。例えば preside は「皆の前に（pre）座る（side）」ということで「議長・司会・演奏者を務める」という意味です。president「大統領，社長」の元です。
・frail は「脆い（fragile）」です。武器のフレイルは flail です。
・cling to... は「……にしがみつく」です。to が関係代名詞 which と共に前方に移動しています。
・the gods were avenged を「神々は復讐された」と訳さないことが肝要です。avenge O とは「O の仇を討つ，O のために［O に代わって］復讐する」という意味です。例えば Avenge me! は「私に復讐してくれ！」ではなく「私の仇を取ってくれ，私のために復讐してくれ」という意味ですから，I was avenged. は「私は仇を取ってもらった，私の復讐は果たされた」という意味です。

これで話は終わったと思いきや，まだ後半があります。このままだと人類は滅亡してしまっているからです。つまり生き残りがいるわけですね。
ところでこの章を訳し始めた時，「あーあれね，ノアの方舟ね」と安易に思ってしまいました。これは誤りです。ノアの方舟は旧約聖書つまりユダヤ教のお話であるのに対し，これはギリシア神話だからです。ただ，このギリシア神話の大洪水神話が，ユダヤ教のノアの方舟神話に影響を与えた可能性がありますね。ギリシア神話ではどのように生き残ったのでしょうか。次回をお楽しみに。
