「ギリシア・ローマ神話(1)」の続きで，「Chapter I In the Beginning」の後半です。
Sometimes the great billows of clouds that rolled at the foot of the red-gold throne shut out for a moment all sight of the earth at his feet; but however thickly the mists gathered, Jupiter could always see old Atlas standing on the shore of Africa with the heavens resting on his bent shoulders. This giant had stood so long that forests of huge trees had sprung up around his feet, and they had grown so tall during the ages and ages that had passed, that their topmost branches reached to the giant's waist and almost hid him from the sight of men. No one offered to relieve him of his burden, not even his two brothers, Prometheus and Epimetheus, to whom had been given the less difficult task of creating man and placing him in the rich gardens of the earth.
金色に輝く玉座の足下で大きくうねる雲によって一瞬，足下の地上の視界が完全に閉ざされることも時にはあったが，どれほど厚く霧が立ち込めても，ユピテル（ゼウス）にはいつでも老アトラスが，アフリカの岸で天を肩に支えながら立っているのを見ることができた。この巨人は余りにも長い間立ち続けてきたので，彼の足の周りには巨木の森が茂り，木々は長い時代を通じて余りに高く成長してきたので，その梢は巨人の腰にまで到達し，彼を人間の目からほとんど覆い隠していた。彼の重荷を軽くしようと申し出た者はおらず，彼の二人の兄弟，プロメテウスとエピメテウスもそうだった。というのも二人にはもう少し軽い仕事，人間を創造し，地上の豊かな園に配置するという仕事が与えられていたのだ。
・however thickly the mists gathered は however＋副詞＋S＋V「いかに副詞に S V しようとも」→「いかに厚く霧が集まろうとも」です。no matter how thickly the mists gathered とも言います。
・天空を支えるアトラスの彫像（西暦150年頃の製作）が，現在開催中（2025.4～2025.10）の大阪・関西万博のイタリア館で見ることができます。
・relieve 人 of 物事「人から物事を取り除く」→relieve him of his burden「彼から重荷を取り除く」です。この relieve「取り除く」の名詞形 relief が，「危難を取り除くリリーフ（投手）」であり，「彫刻刀で取り除くレリーフ」です。
・プロメテウスとエピメテウスは，共通する「メテウス」を取り除くと「プロ（pro）」と「エピ（epi）」となり，これはプロローグとエピローグの関係ですね。pro が「前」，epi が「後」です。アトラスはプロメテウスとエピメテウスの兄で，イアペトゥスの子です。イアペトゥス（イーアペトス）と言えば『ローランの歌』を訳している時，以下のページにお世話になりました。
There was every kind of plant and animal life in the gardens, and all things were very beautiful in this morning of the world—so beautiful that the gods, who must forever dwell in Olympus, felt sad that no eyes like their own could look upon the green meadows and flower-covered hillsides. So they bade Prometheus and Epimetheus fashion a being which should be like and yet unlike themselves. There was nothing but clay out of which to make this new creature called man, but the brothers spent much time over their task, and, when it was finished, Jupiter saw that the work was good, for they had given to man all the qualities that the gods themselves possessed—youth, beauty, health, strength,—everything but immortality.
地上の園にはあらゆる種類の動植物がいて，この世界の曙においてはあらゆるものが美しかったので，いつもオリュンポスで暮らさねばならない神々は，自分自身の目では緑の牧草地や花で覆われた山肌を眺めることができないことを寂しく思った。そこで彼らはプロメテウスとエピメテウスに命じて，自分達に似ているけれども，自分達のようではない生物を生み出させた。人間と呼ばれたこの新しい生物を造る材料は粘土しかなかったが，この兄弟は膨大な時間をかけてこの課題に取り組み，これが成された時，ユピテルにはこの仕事が上手になされたことが分かった。というのも兄弟は人間に，神自身が所有するあらゆる品質 ── 若さ，美，健康，力 ── を授けたからだ。ただ一つ不死を除いて。
・bade Prometheus and Epimetheus fashion の語法は bid＋O＋原形動詞「O に V するよう命じる」です。
・possess は「所有する」。1つ目の ss は濁り，2つ目は濁りません（/pəzes/）
・mortal は「死ぬ運命にある」→immortal は「不死/不滅の」→immortality 名詞形です。
Then Prometheus grew ambitious to add even more to the list of man's blessings; and one day, as he sat brooding by the seashore, he remembered that there was as yet no fire on the earth; for the only flame that burned in all the world was glowing in the sacred halls of Jupiter. For a long time he sat on the seashore, and before night fell he had formed the daring plan of stealing some of the divine fire that burned for always and always on Mount Olympus, and carrying it to the earth that men might revel in its warmth and light.
するとプロメテウスは志を大きくし，人間に与えられた祝福のリストをさらに増やそうとした。そしてある日，海辺で考え事をしながら座っていると，地上にはまだ火がないことを思い出した。全世界の中で，唯一燃えている炎と言えば，ユピテルの神聖な広間で輝くもののみだったのだ。長いあいだ彼は海辺に座っていて，夜が来る前に大胆な計画を練った。それは，オリュンポス山でずっと燃え続けている神聖な炎の一部を盗み，地上に運んで，人間がその暖かさと明るさを大いに楽しめるようにするというものだった。
・brood は「卵を抱く，考える」で breed「飼育する；品種」と関係しています。この oo と ee の関係には blood と bleed「血を流す」，food と feed「餌をやる，餌として食う」などがあります。
・as yet [as of yet] は「まだ（→ない）」です。
・glow「輝く」を grow「成長する」と混同しないようにしましょう。grow「成長する」は green「緑」や grass「草」と関係しています。green grass grows「緑の草が育つ」とでも覚えましょうか。
・revel in... は「……を大いに楽しむ，満喫する」です。revel には「お祭り騒ぎをする」の意味もあり，revelry は「どんちゃん騒ぎ」です。ジ・エルダースクロールズ・オンラインのコールドハーバーには酒盛りの館（The Manor of Revelry）という所があります。
It was a bold thing to dream of doing, but Prometheus forgot the fear of Jupiter's wrath, so determined was he to carry out his plan; and one night, when the gods were in council, seated around the great red-gold throne, he crept softly into the hall, unseen and unheard. The sacred fire was burning brightly on a hearth of polished silver. Some of it Prometheus secreted in a hollow reed and hurried with it back to the earth. Then he waited, with terror at his heart, for he knew that sooner or later the vengeance of Jupiter would search him out, even though he fled to the uttermost parts of the earth.
それを実行しようと夢見るのは大胆なことでしたが，プロメテウスはその計画を実行することを余りにも固く決心しすぎて，ユピテルの怒りを恐れることを忘れた。そしてある晩，金色に輝く大きな玉座の周りに神々が集まって話し合っている時に，彼はこっそりと広間に忍び込んだ。その聖火は磨かれた銀の炉床で明るく輝いていた。プロメテウスはその一部を葦の空洞の中にこっそりと隠し，急いで地上に戻った。それから彼は恐れながら待った。というのも自分が地上の果てまで逃れても，遅かれ早かれユピテルの復讐によって自分が発見されるだろうと分かっていたからである。
・wrath は「憤怒」で，形容詞形は wroth，wrathful です。後者が簡単ですね。
・carry out は「（計画など）を実行する」です。carry out his plan は典型例ですね。
・secret が動詞として使われていますが，頼りにしている『ランダムハウス英和大辞典』にも載っていませんでした。Wiktionary には載っており，「秘密にする，こっそり隠す」です。ただ，調べなくても「その一部を」「葦の空洞の中に」があるから「隠した」だと容易に推測できますね。
・sooner or later は「遅かれ早かれ」です。英語では「早かれ遅かれ」の順ということになります。「あちこち（here and there）」「白黒（black and white）」「需給（supply and demand）」も日本語と英語で順番が違う例です。
When the council of the gods was over, Jupiter looked down through the clouds and saw a strange light on the earth. For a while he did not realize that it was man, building himself a fire; but when he learned the truth, his wrath became so terrible that even the gods trembled and turned away in fear. In a moment Prometheus was seized and carried off to the Caucasus Mountains, where he was securely chained to a rock, and a hungry vulture was sent to tear out his liver and devour it. At night the vulture, having gorged itself, slept on the rocks above its victim's head; and at night the liver of the wretched Prometheus grew again, only to be torn out and eaten by the vulture as soon as the sun rose.
神々の話し合いが終わったあと，ユピテルが雲の下を見下ろすと，地上では見たことのない光が見えた。しばらくの間ユピテルはそれが火を起こした人間であると気づかなかった。しかし真実を知ると，彼の怒りは余りにもすさまじかったので神々すら恐怖に震え，目を逸らした。一瞬にしてプロメテウスは捕えられ，コーカサス山脈に連れていかれて，そこで彼は岩に固く縛られ，腹の空かせたハゲワシが連れてこられて彼の肝臓をついばみ貪り食った。夜になると満腹になったそのハゲワシは犠牲者の頭上の岩で眠り，惨めなプロメテウスの肝臓は夜には再生したので，夜明けと共にそのハゲワシによってついばまれ，食われたのであった。
・build himself a fire については2点あります。まず，make や find などと同様 build は build A B「A のために B を築く・造る」とできます（A が間接目的語，B が直接目的語）。この A に oneself「自分自身」を入れて，build himself B「自身のために B を築く」です。次に，「火を起こす」の「起こす」が build で言えるということです。実際『ランダムハウス英和大辞典』には build a fire = make a fire「火を起こす」が載っています。ただ注目すべきは fire に a が付いていることであり，これはゆらゆらと形の定まらない「火」そのものというより「火を起こす場所，暖炉，焚き火」といった意味でしょう。火を起こすには枝を積み上げたりしなければならないので，build が使えるのでしょう。
・devour は「貪る」で，比喩的に「貪るように読む，（火が）焼き尽くす，（海が）飲み込む」などの意味もあります。vour 部分は「食う」といった意味があり，これに omni「全」が付いて omnivorous は「雑食の」，omnivore は「雑食動物」です。
・gorge は「喉，食道，胃の中」や「峡谷」を意味し，gorge oneself は「腹を満たす」です。
・wretched「惨めな（miserable）」の語尾は「……チト」ではなく「……チッド」のような発音になります（/retʃɪd/）。この「……ト」や「……ド」ではなく「……イッド」のようになるものとして beloved「ビラヴィッド」や wicked「ウィキッド」，「学識のある」という意味の場合の learned「ラーニッド」などがあります。
This terrible punishment kept on for years and years; for though Jupiter heard the cries of Prometheus, and many tales were told of his sufferings, the ruler of the gods never forgave the theft of the sacred fire, nor would he set Prometheus free. But the story tells us that at last there came an end to this cruel vengeance, for Hercules, son of Jupiter, went wandering one day among the mountains, found the tortured Prometheus, and broke his chains, after killing the vulture that had been enjoying this hateful feast.
この恐るべき罰は数万年続いた。ユピテルにはプロメテウスの叫び声が聞こえ，彼の苦しみについて様々な報告がなされたにも拘らず，神々の主は聖火が盗まれたことを決して許さず，決してプロメテウスを解放したくなかったからである。しかし物語によると遂にこの残酷な復讐には終わりがやって来た。というのはユピテルの息子ヘラクレスがある日，山中を散策していて，拷問を受けるプロメテウスを見つけ，それまで悪意ある宴を楽しんできたハゲワシを殺して鎖を引きちぎったからだ。
・for years and years は for many years のような意味と思われますが，many は10までとは限らず，100も1000も意味しえますので，「何年も何年も」では実態にそぐわない場合もあります。ウィキペディアで「プロメテウス」を調べると “その期間は3万年であったとされる” とあることから，「数万年」としておきました。
・vengeance は「復讐」。revenge や avenge の venge が含まれています。
・Hercules はローマ神話におけるヘラクレスの綴りで，英語では「ハーキュリーズ」のようになります（ /hɜːkjʊliːz/）。一方ギリシア神話では Heracles と綴り，「ヘラクリーズ」のようになります（/herəkliːz/）
Though the gods were rejoiced at his freedom, the name of Prometheus was never spoken on Mount Olympus for fear of Jupiter's all-hearing ears; but on the earth men uttered his name in their prayers and taught their children to honor the Fire-giver as one of the greatest among heroes.
彼が自由になったことに神々は喜んだが，ユピテルの地獄耳を恐れてプロメテウスの名前はオリュンポス山では決して口にされなかった。しかし地上では人々は彼の名前を祈りの中で口にし，子どもたちにも，火を教えたその神を，最も偉大な英雄の一人として敬うよう教えたのであった。
・rejoice「喜ぶ」は joy 部分に着目して覚えられますが，×rejoyce ではないので注意です。
・for fear of... は「……を恐れて，……を恐れるが故に」で，〈理由＋恐怖〉を表現できます。〈理由＋欠乏〉を表現できる for lack of...「……が無いゆえに」なんてのもあります。
・prayer は「祈る人」という意味では「プレイアー」（/preɪə(r)/）ですが，「祈りの言葉」という意味では「プレア」（/preə(r)/）ですので気を付けて下さい。
