第四章 国会
Article 41.
The Diet shall be the highest
organ of state power, and shall be the
sole law-making organ of the State.
第四十一条 国会は、国権の最高機関であつて、国の唯一の立法機関である。

the Diet は日本の「国会」を意味し，米国議会は
Congress，英国議会は
Parliament です。diet は「食事，規定食（ダイエット食」」の意味もあり，「ダイエットをする」は go on a diet，「ダイエット中である」は be on a diet です（I'm on a diet.）。この go on a... / be on a... パターンは strike（
ストライキ），trip（旅），picnic 等にも使われます。

Article 42. The Diet shall
consist of two Houses,
namely the House of Representatives and
the House of Councillors.
第四十二条 国会は、衆議院及び参議院の両議院でこれを構成する。
・consist of...「……から成る」（be made up of...）
・namely「すなわち」（文中で用い，文頭では用いない）

Article 43. Both Houses shall consist of
elected members, representative of all the people.
第四十三条 両議院は、全国民を代表する選挙された議員でこれを組織する。
・elect「選出する」（cf. select「選ぶ」）
The number of the members of each House shall be fixed by law.
両議院の議員の定数は、法律でこれを定める。

衆議院定数は発足時466，最大時512，2024年6月現在で
465人。
参議院は発足時250，最大時252，2024年6月現在で
248人。国会議員の定数を規定しているのは「
公職選挙法」，地方議員は「
地方自治法」です。
Article 44. The qualifications of members of both Houses and their electors shall be fixed by law. However, there shall be no
discrimination because of race,
creed, sex, social status, family origin, education, property or income.
第四十四条 両議院の議員及びその選挙人の資格は、法律でこれを定める。但し、人種、信条、性別、社会的身分、門地、教育、財産又は収入によつて差別してはならない。

Article 45.
The term of office of members of the House of Representatives shall be four years. However, the term shall be terminated before the full term is up in case the House of Representatives is dissolved.
第四十五条 衆議院議員の任期は、四年とする。但し、衆議院解散の場合には、その期間満了前に終了する。
・office「官職，公職」→term of office「任期」
・驚くべきことに，任期が4年満了した上での選挙は1976年の第34回総選挙（三木内閣時）のみです。
麻生内閣は2009年9月10に
衆議院の任期満了のところ，7月21日に
衆議院を解散していますので2か月弱任期を残しての解散です（この後
政権交代）
Article 46. The term of office of members of the House of Councillors shall be six years, and election for half the members shall take place
every three years.
第四十六条 参議院議員の任期は、六年とし、三年ごとに議員の半数を改選する。
・every three years「3年ごとに」。3年を1つのまとまりと捉えているため，every の後に three years という複数名詞が来られる。
・
参議院は任期満了するため，ほぼきっちり3年ごとに選挙があります。2022年7月10日，2019年7月21日，2016年7月10日，2013年7月21日と，だいたい7月ですね。次は2025年7月に行われるはずです。
