東大，慶應大，医大（慈恵医大）と見て来ましたが，今回は早稲田大学のを見ます。2016年度と2017年度の，第３問の英文法問題です。
下線が引かれた各部分に文法的誤りがあればその場所を記号で答えよ。誤りがない場合は (F) と答えよ。
2016年度

それでは解説します。

「政府の役人は，喫煙を完全に禁止するのはうまく効果が上がらないと主張し，様々な方法で現行の制度を強化する事を提案した」
(B) の maintain that... は「……であると主張する」です。「維持する，整備（保守，メンテナンス）する」の意味もあります。a complete ban on... は「……の完全な禁止」
(D) の suggest は「示唆する，提案する」ですが，「Vすることを提案する」は❌suggest to-V と言えません。⭕️suggest (～'s) Ving や⭕️suggest that S (should) V です。これはできるべきでしょう。

「私はこの高校で相当の経験を積んできたので，ここの仕事を続けさせて頂ければ有り難いのです」
(C) の I would appreciate it if you would [could] V「Vして頂ければ有り難いのですが」は丸暗記すべきほど重要な言い回しです。仮定法を下敷きにしており when でなく if を使うべきでしょう（よって解答は (D)）
(D) の leave 人 to-V は「人に V させる」です。
(E) の get on with... は「……を続ける」です。
３ (A)When it was time to leave (B)and I was waiting for the taxi (C)to take me to the station, (D)I have to confess (E)that I shed a tear or two.
「出発すべき時になり，駅に連れて行くタクシーを待っていたとき，ひと粒ふた粒の涙を流したことを告白せざるを得ない」
文法的誤りはありません（解答は(F)）。注意力のある人は，「文全体が過去時制なのに have to が現在形である」ことに気づいてしまいますが，「私が白状・告白する」のは今なので I have to confess（現在時制）で良いのです。
４ (A)A lack of stable income (B)was a problem (C)which Lucy was confronted (D)when she thought of (E)becoming an actress.
「女優になることを考えていた時に安定収入がなかったことはルーシーが直面していた問題であった」
(C) の confront ですが，「人 is confronted with 問題」「人 is confronted by 問題」と言います。よって正しくは (C)which Lucy was confronted with，(C)which Lucy was confronted by です。参考までに face の場合，「人 faces 問題」「人 is faced with 問題」ですから，(C)which Lucy faced，(C)which Lucy was faced with です。
５ (A)How could you (B)have possibly voted (C)for that candidate, (D)given what you know about (E)his record of incompetent and immoral?
「どうして君があの候補者に投票するなんてことがあり得たんだ？ 無能で不道徳の記録について君も知っているのに」
(B)(C) vote for... は「……に（賛成）投票する」
(D) given... は「（条件として）……が与えられれば」「……を考えたら」
(E) incompetent は「無能な」，immoral は「不道徳な，ふしだらな」という形容詞。形容詞が of の目的語にはなりませんから，(E) が不適切箇所です。正しくは his record of being incompetent and immoral としたり，incompetent を incompetence，immoral を immorality と名詞形にする必要があります。
６ (A)I don't usually (B)get to see my father (C)in the morning because (D)he has already left for work (E)by the time I get up.
「普段は朝に父の姿を見る機会がない。私が起きるまでに仕事に出てしまっているからだ」
(B) get to-V は「Vするようになる」「Vする機会を得る」
(E) by the time については，先ず by... と until... の区別をしましょう。
by... は「……までには」。until... は「……までずっと」。
until は前置詞にも接続詞にもなるので until noon「正午までずっと」とも言えるし，until I come home「私が帰宅するまでずっと」とも言えます。
しかし by は接続詞になれません。by noon「正午までには」とは言えても，❌by I come home「私が帰宅するまでには」とは言えないのです。これを言えるようにするのが by the time S V です（by the time I come home）。よって by the time S V はとても重要な表現ということになりますね。
以上よりこの文に文法的誤りはありません（解答は(F)）
７ (A)The story was horrified, (B)not just for what the criminals had done to their victims, (C)but for the cruelty (D)with which they had carried out (E)their murder plan.
これは瞬殺して欲しいですね。interest は「興味・関心を持たせる」ですから，The story was interesting. で「その話は面白かった」となります。同様に horrify は「怖がらせる」ですから，❌The story was horrified. ではなく⭕️The story was horrifying. で「その話は恐ろしかった」です。
